  Preparation

Abraham Lincoln once said "If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six sharpening my axe".

What he was saying here is that preparation is important. In fact, it's so important that quite often the planning and preparation takes longer than the actual job.

I've often found this to be true. When I jump in and do something without too much preparation or thought I often have to go back to correct or repair something, or even do the whole thing over again. But if I plan my work out and make sure I have all my tools and supplies before I start the job goes better. It seems like I'm putting in more work, but that's not the case, because it's done right the first time, and I don't have to go back to re-do anything.
